The MSOA Foundation is a program that generates money from contributors and helps many art programs at Bak MSOA.

“I feel that the MSOA Foundation is a crucial component of Bak’s success. By funding our award-winning art programs, artists-in-residence, essential materials, technology, and much more,” Jennifer Davis, PTO member and parent said.

The MSOA Foundation started in 1999, but in 2002 Dora Bak donated $1.5 million to the Middle School of the Arts.

“When Dora Bak contributed to making a Foundation and to help the students, the school changed tremendously since the donation,”

Stephanie Chesler, visual arts teacher said.

Every year, the teachers from all five art areas come up with a wish list of a few things they want for their department.

“It is nice that the Foundation leaders let the teachers have a budget on what materials we want to get for the year,” Chesler said.

Each year, the MSOA Foundation asks Bak parents to donate $100 to the Foundation and put that $100 on their tax deduction list. The goal of this is to raise $100,000 for the school every year.

“We try to raise $100,000 every year, but the most we have ever raised in a year from contributors was $47,000. This year in 2017, we have only raised a little over $30,000 so far,” Susan Diaz, Executive Director of the Foundation said.

Now called Bak MSOA after the donation by Dora Bak, the school has changed since the year the foundation was started.

Chesler said, “Without the Foundation, the school would not have as much success as it has today.”
