To protect students and faculty from the flu virus, the Palm Beach County School District offered free flu shots to everyone at school.

“This program was started by a football player from Jacksonville, and when he saw so many students getting sick from the flu during the school year he wanted to offer flu shots,” Marianne Pettus, a nurse that administered the flu shots, said.

Healthy School LLC, in cooperation with schools and the Palm Beach County Department of Health, conducted the “Teach Flu a Lesson” program. Deven Seedial, eighth grade piano major, thought that it was “beneficial” to everyone who received the vaccination.

“It helps by saving valuable school time for students and faculty; they will not have to stay home if they are infected with the flu,” Seedial said.

According to the newsletter sent home to students, the annual program only offered a flu shot this year to better protect against the flu because the Centers for Disease Control did not recommend using the mist vaccine.

“I got the flu shot because I really think it is crucial during flu season and it can help you to not stay sick,” Sheevam Patel, eighth grade communications major, said.

Pettus said that the flu spreads faster at school, and it was crucial to protect the people at school against the virus.

Patel said, “I think the program for free flu shots is really helpful when it comes to being inexpensive but also giving a healthy medication that can help many people in our school to stay healthy across the flu season.”
