Eighth grade theater majors got the chance to show their families and friends what they worked on in class at the eighth grade theater showcase on Dec. 12.

“This showcase is a compilation of everything we do in class. We’ll be practicing a piece in class and our teacher will ask us if we want to perform that in the showcase. We say sure, and we practice it a little more so we’re ready to perform,” Chandler Paszkiet, eighth grade theater major, said.

The students performed a variety of songs and monologues from Broadway plays like “The Schuyler Sisters” from Hamilton. They also performed a variety of familiar Christmas tunes like “The Christmas Song.”

“We did mostly holiday songs and Broadway show tunes like ‘Be Kind to Your Parents,’ ‘Tonight at Eight,’ and ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside,’” Charlie Blackwell, eighth grade theater major, said.

This showcase was different from other performances the theater students put on because it focused more on individual pieces and talent rather than having one collaborative group play. Students also did not rehearse as hard as they would for the end of the year performance.

“This performance was different because everything we did in the show was a work in progress. Nothing is ever completely finished, but the eighth grade showcase isn’t supposed to be perfect,” Blackwell said.

The showcase also helped students with their performing skills.

“The students learn what it takes to perform with the pressure of people watching them,” Richard Valentine, theater teacher said. “You can’t recreate that in a classroom.”
