More and more students spend time on their mobile devices when they should be asleep, leaving them worn out the next day.

Using technology at night keeps students from getting the recommended eight hours of sleep. Students often stay up texting friends, taking pictures, or playing games. According to www.cnn.com using technology at night usually causes lack of sleep. Students have become prone to daylight sleepiness.

It is recommended that children ages 12-18 get eight to 10 hours of sleep, according to www.sleepfoundation.org However, a poll found only 20 percent of kids get the recommended amount of sleep on school nights, and 45 percent of students sleep less than eight hours a night.

Devices like cell phones, televisions, computers, and tablets are some of the main reasons that students are losing sleep.

According to www.aspeneducation.com watching television is the most popular activity (76 percent of students), texting and social media is the second most popular (20 percent of students), and talking on the phone is the least popular technological activity within an hour before bedtime (4 percent of students). Studies also show that 97 percent of all teenagers have at least one technological device in their bedroom. The average sixth grader has two and the average twelfth grader has about four devices in their bedroom.

Students have reported falling asleep in class or while doing homework because of their lack of sleep, and use of technology before bed. This can be detrimental not only to health, but also to grades.

Schoolwork quality dropped because students are not sleeping enough. Their grades plummet because they stay up late using technology instead of  going to sleep at the correct time.
