“Wicked,” directed by John M Chu, was released on November 22, 2024, and is a musical movie adaptation of the classic Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. This movie stars iconic singer, Ariana Grande as Glinda and talented actor, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.
The storyline follows Elphaba, a young woman born with green skin and telekinetic powers creating a profound friendship with Glinda, a student who desires popularity. This film was a strong representation of the theater production as the movie’s characters matched the musical’s characters’ personalities.
Their love/hate relationship is the core of the movie and leads to some great bits of comedy in the beginning as the pair try to constantly one-up each other. If you’re already a fan of the musical, you will most likely be glad with what director John M Chu has done transferring it to screens. You could tell that the costumes, the sets, the choreography, and the acting were almost done to perfection making this a great watch.
However, if you aren’t a Wicked enthusiast, you might not be converted into one. It doesn’t have the comedic jokes, the startling twists, or the astonishing dance routines that you might have expected. The movie has many subplots and supporting characters who most likely have their moment in the second part.
Moreover, it’s frustrating to realize that you’re only halfway through the plot after a whole 2 hours and 40 minutes and that Part Two won’t be in cinemas for another year. Overall, I rate this film a 4/5 stars. This was a very well-made and engaging movie and I am sure that “Wicked” will forever alter the way I think about the colors pink and green.
Disney’s Moana 2, directed by David Derrick Jr., is a heartwarming and thrilling sequel that captures the spirit of adventure and discovery from the original movie.
Released on November 27, 2024, the story picks up three years after Moana’s first daring voyage and takes audiences on another epic journey across the ocean.
Voiced once again by Auli’i Cravalho, Moana is braver and more determined than ever as she follows a mysterious call from her ancestors. This time, she’s joined by a captivating crew: Loto, the ship’s clever engineer (voiced by Rose Matafeo); Moni, the historian of Motunui (voiced by Hualalai Chung); and an elderly farmer, portrayed by David Fane. Of course, Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, whose larger-than-life personality and humorous self bring a familiar charm.
One of the standout elements of Moana 2 is its exciting new characters and twists. The viewers discover that Moana has a younger sister, a revelation that adds an emotional layer to the story. Their growing bond is beautifully portrayed and gives viewers plenty of heartwarming moments.
Meanwhile, Matangi, a mysterious woman surrounded by bats and wielding strange powers, emerges as the villain—but with surprising depth. While her actions create challenges, her wisdom helps Moana learn that there’s always another way to solve problems.
The film’s breathtaking visuals, uplifting music, and touching family, courage, and connection themes make it unforgettable. Moana’s journey to explore nearby islands and unite her people with others connected to the ocean inspires a deep sense of purpose and discovery.
Overall, Moana 2 stays true to the spirit of the original while introducing fresh, exciting ideas. I give it 4/5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who loves adventure, humor, and heartfelt stories.
