Learning to take a step back and to ‘touch grass’ is something we struggle with as a society. Whether on our phones or scrolling endlessly through social media- technology is consuming our lives. People spend hours texting, taking photos, and scrolling through apps only to not appreciate what’s important: The present. The here, the now, and the people you spend it with.

The dependability of technology to provide us with entertainment has made us lose the connection between the personal relationships in our lives. All of our time is eaten up with surfing the internet instead of working on creating stronger bonds and healthier relationships with loved ones. With more dedication to doing activities that re-spark your interest with those around you, your happiness and positivity will only continue to grow.

According to Griffith College, A 2018 study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology discovered that phone use during a meal led to a noticeable decrease in diners’ enjoyment. By setting limits on technology or phone use during family time, you can use the time more wisely to tell each other the details about your day, and what’s going on in your life, and to genuinely strengthen the bond of your family.Creating an environment of comfort and togetherness by partaking in engaging activities- such as sports, nature adventures, and board games- will encourage individuals to open up and express themselves face-to-face, foster long-lasting memories, and form stronger links built upon understanding and clear communication.

For people of all ages, it is thought that with the click of a button or a flash of a camera, memories can be truly captured. Yet, the true happiness lies with a person witnessing events firsthand, living in the real world and not the digital one. By putting your phone down, you can feel the raw emotions and power of live experiences that photos or videos won’t be able to capture.

During certain concerts, artists mandate audience members to put all cellular devices into a case that is returned at the end of the show. In an article from the Los Angeles Times, Bruno Mars is quoted saying, “You just get to paint — truly live in the moment. And I think there’s a beauty in seeing something fail and then being able to talk about it with the crowd.” In the article, a fan who had seen him live felt so much more immersed in the experience without the distraction of electronics lighting up the stands from her or surrounding phones. This essentially creates a stronger connection and more enjoyable experience for both the crowd and the artist as they spread their talents across the stadium.

The little moments in life play a significant role in the bigger picture more often than you realize. With constant notifications and social media distractions, we often overlook the simple joys around us, like a beautiful sunset or laughter between a friend. Though this might not feel all that impactful, acts of kindness, mindfulness, and appreciation help shape who we are. Going outside to clear your mind, taking a portion of the day reserved for something you enjoy, or doing something good for the community are all activities that make life all the more memorable. By putting technology aside once and a while, you might be surprised with what you could’ve been missing out on.

While separating yourself from technology is important, people may counter that we shouldn’t forget the benefits it provides to help us stay in touch with loved ones who might live far away or have busy schedules. It also allows us the gift of vital information and news updates that can be found in an instant, creates enhanced global communication, and supplies us with plenty of improved entertainment to help us unwind.

According to an article by Sogolytics, “It [technology] provides us with unparalleled convenience, efficiency, and connectivity, empowering us to perform tasks more easily, communicate across vast distances, and access a wealth of information at our fingertips.”

Although technology has been incredibly helpful, it is important to prioritize yourself and the way you live your life in a healthier way. Therefore, practicing mindfulness and taking breaks from our phones is essential in today’s fast-paced world.

Reducing screen time frees up more time to connect with family and friends,” as stated by Mayo Clinic Health System. “We often miss out on the fun and beauty happening around us because of screens. By being present and in the moment — perhaps by setting aside a device — you may find what you need to fill that void.”

Decreasing our time on social media to a goal of less than 2 hours allows us to focus on what matters: spending quality time with those around us. Engaging in activities together—playing games, going for a walk, or just sharing stories—strengthens our connections and makes us happier. Being mindful means being present and grounded. When we put our phones down and appreciate our surroundings, we can experience life more fully and cultivate gratitude for everyday moments. If you put down the phone and shut off the screen, you too, will be able to appreciate just how beautiful the here and the now truly is.
