After a long day of school, many kids go home and watch YouTube or Netflix. As they are watching their favorite shows, a commercial comes up. For these apps, you could always buy YouTube Premium or upgrade your Netflix plan. However, Prime Video is different.
Many people are infuriated at Prime Video for charging more for no ads, on top of a subscription people have already paid for. They are now charging an extra $2.99 on top of a subscription. Most people have a Prime Video subscription along with Amazon Prime for $14.99, and if you want no ads, it would be $17.98. Over 12 months, that would be $215.76 compared to the $179.88 without paying for no ads. These ads are constant and not able to be skipped, unlike YouTube.
The reason why Prime Video is doing this is due to lack of money. FastCompany says that Prime Video is using ads to generate more revenue, taking advantage of its 200 million subscribers worldwide to boost revenue massively. “Because of this, people canceled their subscription, about 3% of people or about 6 million people,” Media Play News stated.
However, this is a minor issue than another feature on Prime Video that also infuriates people: Renting shows and movies. Even if you buy the Prime Video subscription along with the additional purchase of no ads, you will still have to rent or buy these movies and shows from $3.99 all the way to $20.
This is an issue because on top of your subscription, you have to pay for movies and shows, and a lot of famous movies and shows, such as Despicable Me 4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 2, have to be rented with money, and there aren’t a lot of movies and shows for free on Prime Video, making it unfair for people. The reason is that movies made by different companies, such as Marvel, DC, or Warner Bros., are copyrighted so they must pay for the rights to stream the movie on their platform.
However, if they don’t pay for a movie, they can charge you money to at least make a profit out of it, showing the greediness that Prime Video has. People are enraged about it because unlike Netflix or HBO Max, which give movies and shows out for completely free because of your subscription, Prime Video makes you pay for movies and shows even though you have a subscription, causing many people to cancel their subscription.
Along with this, another issue is the scarcity of free movies and shows on Prime. Although there are many shows and movies out for free, many of the more popular and well-known movies, such as Despicable Me 4 or Avengers: Infinity War, are all paid, leaving very few well-known movies for free.
Prime Video gives you access to many TV shows and movies, however many of these shows and movies are restricted due to many people having to rent and buy movies and Prime Video makes the experience unenjoyable with ads that are long and not able to be skipped.
