Halloween movies of the past spook audiences today
With Halloween less than a month away, and more Halloween movies coming out, it is important to remember the spooky movies that made us truly appreciate the holiday. If you’re searching for a watch list for the month of October, look no further.
‘Goosebumps’
One of the most iconic Halloween movies was “Goosebumps.” The movie was directed by Rob Letterman and was produced by Deborah A. Forte and Neal H. Mortiz. Released in 2015, the film grossed over $150 million in theaters worldwide.
The movie portrays teenage Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) and his neighbor Hannah (Odeya Rush). Hannah’s mysterious father (Jack Black), who plays R.L Stine in this film, was up to something suspicious, and when Zach found out what he was doing, the town had a hectic couple of days.
The film was based on the “Goosebumps” series written by R.L. Stine, and since the release of the first book, there have been over 400 million sales worldwide, making it the second-most bought book in the world.
‘Hocus Pocus’
“Sisters, all Hallow’s Eve has become a night of frolic, where children wear costumes and run amok!” said Winfred Sanderson, played by actor Bette Midler.
This famous line is from the movie “Hocus Pocus,” a family-friendly Halloween movie, which was released in July of 1993, and grossed over $45 million in theaters worldwide. The movie was directed by Kenny Ortega and was produced by David Kirschner and Steven Haft.
The movie is set in 1693 when the Salem Witch Trials occurred. Three witch sisters hear protesters who want to execute them for witchcraft. During the execution one of the witches enchants themselves so they will eventually be able to come back to life. Later, Max Dennison (Omri Katz) moves into the town and explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch). After exploring the house, they accidentally free the evil witches. It is then up to them to prevent witches becoming immortal.
‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’
This is one of Tim Burton’s widely-known Halloween films. The stop-motion animated film was released in 1993, and grossed over $90 million at the box office. The Disney film was directed by Henry Selick and was produced by Tim Burton and Denise Di Novi. It took around three and a half years to create due to the intricacy of stop-motion animation.
The film starts off with the pumpkin king, Jack Skellington, going into a forest and noticing that there are other worlds and not just Halloween Town. He decides that instead of wanting to understand Christmas, he should take it over by kidnapping Santa Claus, or “Sandy Claws,” as he says it. So Jack puts all his people to work and wants to take over the Christmas town once and for all.
Overall, these movies are a good watch for the Halloween season and will provide a joyful experience for many.
