Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y was the “greatest selling electric vehicle in history,” according to CarAndDriver, and the “greatest selling vehicle in 2023,” according to 

Drive.com expert analyst, Ben Zachariah. Let’s take a closer look at the specs compared to the second best selling electric vehicle in the U.S of 2023, the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

A factor that prevents many people from getting an electric vehicle is the range. “The Tesla Model Y long range goes three-hundred twenty miles on a single charge,” according to Tesla dealer and former Bak student, Kaleb Marshall. Ford Mustang’s Mach-E California Route 1 can go three-hundred twelve miles on a single charge, according to the manufacturer, Ford. In the range category, Tesla is the winner.

Another category that makes gas-powered vehicles more appealing, is their comfortability in road trips. Kaleb stated “In the Model Y it immediately tells you where to charge and where everything is,” As a person who has used a Tesla Model Y on road trips, I can verify that in the Tesla, it tells you all the information you need to know when on a road trip. The car will tell you where to charge and how long you need to charge, in order to get to your destination.

The Model Y’s main interior feature is the fifteen inch screen. According to Stacey Teel the big screen is very helpful and easy to see things on. The Mach-E also has a big screen which is 15.4 inches, according to Ford.

Tesla is often referred to as a technology company that makes cars, rather than a car manufacturer. They display their technological abilities very well in their software updates. According to Teel “I feel like it’s a new car when I walk in after a software update,” Although Ford and many other manufacturers have started to incorporate software updates, they don’t nearly have the capabilities that Teslas have. As a Tesla user, I have seen the great changes Tesla can make to its vehicles through software updates. These improvements include but are not limited to, Full self-driving abilities, safety improvements, and digital improvements.

Although Tesla has many strengths, it also has areas in which it is not the greatest. One of these is looks. Even a Tesla dealer stated that he thinks the Mach-E looks really cool. Teslas are often referred to as “a penguin on its stomach” and “a big microwave. ” They also often have wide body panel gaps, which are frowned upon within the car community.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

According to CarAndDriver experts Joey Capparella and Caleb Miller,“The Third best selling electric vehicle of 2023 is the Mach-E, just behind the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y,”

A main factor that decides the quality of an electric vehicle is the battery range. The Mach-E is also a strong competitor in the category of battery range, as the longest range trim of the Mach-E, the California Route 1, has a battery range of three-hundred twelve miles, according to the manufacturer, Ford. The Model Y Long Range trim comes in a bit higher at three-hundred thirty miles, according to the manufacturer, Tesla.

Another main feature of electric vehicles is their acceleration. The Mustang Mach-E’s most powerful trim, the GT, has an acceleration of 0-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, according to Ford. The Model Y’s performance trim also has a 0-60 of  3.6 seconds, according to CarAndDriver, making it a tie in the acceleration category.

One important element in any car is the interior quality. According to Chris Teague, a U.S News car expert, “The Mach-E is more upscale than expected and bests the Model Y for interior quality,”  The Mach-E is equipped with synthetic leather upholstery, which is considered a higher quality than the regular synthetic leather that is on the Model Y.

The Mustang Mach-E is a crossover based on the Ford Mustang, a sporty car. This gives it a longer front end and sharp headlights. Our staff conducted a field study, where they showed a range of different people, from teachers to staff, and students, both the Model Y and the Mach-E. The field study showed that the majority of the people thought that the Mach-E looked better, with a 21 to 2 vote in favor of the Mach-E. Even a Tesla dealer, Kaleb Martial, said “I think the Mach-E looks cooler,”

One downside to the Mach-E is that since it is Ford’s first mass-produced electric vehicle, and has only been in production for three years, they still haven’t fixed all of its problems, and make recalls often. Tesla also makes recalls, but Tesla’s recalls are mostly over-the-air updates, and for the Mach-E you would need to physically take your car to a service center.

Overall, Both cars come head to head, as they are both great cars. In aspects such as interior quality, and looks, the Mach-E comes in better. In aspects of battery range and technology, the Tesla comes in higher. At the end of the day the decision of which car is better comes down to personal opinion, and what categories you believe are more important.
