TikTok is a popular social media app that allows users to create, watch, and share short videos on all mobile devices. It has recently become an increasingly popular social media platform. Videos played are personalized to what viewers like to watch. It usually features music and sound effects. This app is known for its addictive clips and high levels of engagement. While primarily known for its entertainment value, TikTok is also used for educational purposes. Its effectiveness as a learning tool is still being debated. While some students believe it can be educational, others think it’s more of a distraction than a useful resource.
One subject that TikTok is extremely helpful in is math. The app’s short-form videos allow students to quickly find solutions to specific problems, making it a valuable resource for those struggling with this subject.
“Math is a lot more straightforward, and you could easily just search up how to solve this kind of problem on TikTok,” Zoe Bruck, eighth-grade strings major, said.
The app’s short-form videos allow students to quickly find solutions to specific problems, making it a valuable resource. TikTok has many videos with learning tips and advice on improving academic skills.
Beyond learning new subjects, TikTok also promotes creativity and expressing new ways to learn or represent your ideas.
“TikTok can help students find new ways to approach their work or share their own ideas,” Sarah Holtzman, seventh-grade vocal major, said.
From educational challenges to creative study tips, TikTok encourages students to think outside the box and approach learning more interactively and enjoyably.
Many students are using TikTok to share study techniques, tips on memorization, and ways to stay organized.
Despite the potential benefits, the app also has its drawbacks. Many students find TikTok distracting and can take away time from studying or finishing their school work.
“It can distract them from their opportunities and their real tasks that they should try to stay on top of,” Holtzman said.
This can make it difficult for students trying to focus on their assignments or prepare for tests which can lead them to receive lower test grades and scores.
“Right now when you’re in middle school and you have a lot of assignments to do, it probably doesn’t help,” Holtzman said.
Even though TikTok might not be ideal for students who need to stay focused on their assignments, it can still benefit those looking to explore new ideas and develop interests beyond the classroom and learning area.
“I think it definitely lowers kids’ attention spans,” Holtzman said.
From five years ago to now, in general, social media has fundamentally changed the way students think, changing the attention from two and a half minutes span to, “8.25 seconds,” according to Samba Recovery.
Next time you are constantly struggling with a question on your assignment consider going on TikTok to find step-by-step tutorials.
