Before it shines as the world’s only 700-ton holiday sand tree, Sandi begins her life as a pile of sand in an undisclosed storage unit in West Palm Beach, where a dedicated group of crew members and artists turn regular sand into a huge, sparkling, 35-foot tree.
In her newly sculpted form, Sandi played host to Downtown West Palm Beach’s “Symphony of Lights” on Clematis Street in December, and for those who visited her, it just made their holiday season that much brighter.
“The Sandi Tree is one of my favorite places to go to,” said seventh grade music major Nicole Hernandez. “I really like how it’s correlated to how Florida is known for beaches. I think that it is a beautiful sight, and looking at it from an angle brings joy to my face.”
The site transformed Flagler Drive, with thousands of lights adorning the intracoastal and downtown. But before the people, food, and music were added to the scene, a crew of very talented people worked throughout the months of October and November to create Sandi, the icon, the lady dressed in a variety of color dresses.
“I like how it can really combine the Christmas spirit and holiday mood with our Floridian selves,” said Maya White, eight grade communications major. “And the way that we are so close to the beach and it just combines the festivity with where we live. I just think it’s a great experience overall. ”
Sandi not only brings joy to locals, she also attracts many Floridians tourists from all over the world eager to experience Sandi’s charm and our city’s many events and attractions.
In one of the City of West Palm Beach’s press releases, Mayor Keith A. James described the appeal of the Sandi tree. “From the glow of Sandi on the Waterfront to the joy of our neighborhood celebrations, West Palm Wonderland brings our entire city to life. It’s a season to reflect, connect, and celebrate all that makes West Palm Beach such a vibrant place to call home.”
Over time, Sandi has become a Florida tradition which symbolizes that even though Florida doesn’t experience snow, we do experience sand. Its creativity and coastal vibe not only makes the coast light up, but it makes our hearts light up too.
“Seeing Sandi was amazing!” said Ava Hwang, seventh grade communications major. “My cousins and I loved the expert handy work and intricate design.”
