K-Pop is an extremely favored genre of music. In order to find success with the K-Pop-esque trend Hybe and Geffen created the global girl group Katseye. Hybe is a South Korean entertainment company that created groups such as TXT, ENHYPEN, and BTS. This company collaborated with Geffen Records who host artists such as Weezer, Olivia Rodrigo, and Blink-182.
The process started with 120,000 girls applying from all over the world. The girls were all evaluated and the number cut down to 20 final contestants. Then they would begin competing in a program named Dream Academy. After a rigorous two years of training and development the group Katseye was formed out of six of the most promising trainees. Sophia the leader, Megan the all rounder, Lara the main vocalist, Manon the visual, Yoonchae the maknae (the youngest), and Daniela the main dancer.
The Dream Academy Katseye Documentary gained attraction as it first came out. Sixth grade band major, Kinley Hamlin exclaimed, “In 2023 I watched Dream Academy, and fell in love with them.”
Viewers also fell in love with Katseye because of the cultural differences. Lara Raj, the main singer for the band is Indian and of Tamil origins
“They all represent their cultures and that’s influential to younger fans of the same culture. If they are afraid to show their own culture, Katseye can influence them,” Stated 7th grade Theatre major, Ayla Phlum.
In one of their most notable collaborations Katseye worked with Gap where each member wore Gap apparel while doing choreography. Lara was especially noticed because of her wearing a traditional Indian Bindi and an Om necklace. Lara has expressed her feelings on wanting to inspire brown girls to be confident and feel represented.
Whether it’s with collaborations or new songs. Katseye’s rise to fame isn’t done yet, as they still continuously grow. As Katseye says, “I’ll go M.I.A.”
