If you like to read, then Battle of the Books, a BAK book club was created just for you. The club is sponsored by Mrs. Jennifer Gardiner, a sixth grade ELA teacher, and runs year round.
In the club, participants read books and compete in a competition against other schools, where students have an opportunity to earn high roles and trophies.
Battle of the Books is not only a club for bookworms, it helps students learn multitude of new words and gain some social skills like working in a group and displaying true sportsmanship through competitions. But that’s not all.
“We read book and write summaries, as well as play games against other teams,” explained club member, Aanya Chavda, a seventh grade communications major. “Tat helps us prepare plus we get tiny toy ducks as prizes!”
Chavda explains how she and the others in the club prepare for the Battle of the Books tournament.
“You just have to work with your team and check each question to make sure you got it right,” added Campbell Gray, an eighth grade theater major and Battle of the Books club member. “I got really close to the people on my team, and I really think that’s good.”
Being in a club where you make new friends who share a love for books is beneficial for students in many ways, like fostering a love of reading through a fun, team-based competition, improving their vocabulary and thinking skills and communicate better with each other.
“I think I am definitely using more advanced words than before,” Chavda said.
Reading books not only help students with new vocabulary, but as students work together to answer questions in the competitions, it enhances cooperation, responsibility, and good sportsmanship–skills that last a lifetime.
