Pop stars are very influential people. Revolutionary artists like Britney Spears and Tate McRae have redefined artistic creativity and pop stardom, setting new trends in performance and public image. If you were to put these two top pop star artists in a boxing ring, who would win?
Spears was the icon of the early 1990s and late 2000s. Known as “The Princess of Pop,” she has what no other pop star has ever had: global mass cultural reach.
After Britney’s public decline, people wondered if a new artist could take her place. Meanwhile, the music industry made sure everyone followed Spears’ blueprint and business model–the formula for how to develop, market, and sell a modern female pop star. So, who was next?
Enter Taylor Swift into the picture. Taylor dominated the charts with her unparalleled popularity but compared to Spears with her iconic Y2K pop and captivating choreography, Taylor could not win the battle of “the iconic pop stars.” So, who could rival Britney’s fierce and dance powered empire?
On July 1, 2003, that question was answered. The global icon, Tate McRae, was born. To know about Tate’s impact, you first need to know the influence of Spears.
Spears took over in the early 2000s. But her true beginning happened about a decade before when she starred in the popular show the Mickey Mouse Club in 1993, where she played the role of one of the Musketeers. At 16, she then released her hit debut album “Baby One More Time,” which threw her into stardom. After releasing “Baby One More Time,” Spears released another hit album called “Oops! I did It Again,” which made as big an impact as her previous album did. In her “Baby One More Time” era, she released a music video described as “groundbreaking” and the one of the most notable in pop history. Her ‘Oops! I Did It Again” was also deemed as iconic due to the amazing choreography and futuristic setting.
“I think she might have more influence on the performance aspect,” said Assistant Principal, Mr. Daniel Stechschulte. Followed by journalism teacher Mrs. Cosano, who added, “Britney was more than an iconic pop star, she re-defined 90s music with her 1998 debut “Baby One More Time.”
“Her career was defined by massive chart-topping hits and high-concept music videos, but what made her a global superstar was her unforgettable, polished choreography. She had cultural dominance. At her peak in the early 2000s, her influence spanned music, fashion, and of course, media. Her name became synonymous with modern pop culture.”
Though her voice was not necessarily the greatest, as compared to other singers, Spears was a revolutionary dancer, overshadowing her singing. To the public she had a “ baby voice’’ but her natural deeper vocal tone when heard was positively received by the media. On the opposite side of the singing spectrum is Tate Mcrae, known for her higher sopranic voice which she developed at a young age.
McRae is known as a triple threat, being a singer, songwriter and an extraordinary dancer. She is known for her angelic tone and expressive singing, unlike Spears, who is better known for combining singing and dancing choreography.
Spears’ voice type is a light, nasal, and distinctively recognizable, youthful tone, though her natural speaking voice is significantly deeper. Fans loved her falsetto/head voice, while her critics focused on her personal life’s messiness and her desire to avoid the industry that controlled her life. Still, the question to ask is, between these two top pop artists, Spears and McCrae, who would win at the ring? Will Tate be the next Britney?
“No, I don’t think [Tate will be the new Britney Spears],” seventh-grade theatre major Mia Jiang. “It’s just that Britney got so much hate in the late 2000s and Tate doesn’t get hate. People do dislike her but not hate her.”
Spears was very publicly scrutinized by the early media due to people calling her music “Manufactured Pop.” They focused on the aspect of her image and lip-syncing instead of her actual performance. On a lesser scale, but very similarly, McRae also was under fire for lip-syncing.
On October 31, 2025 while performing a song, Mcrae was recorded holding her microphone upside down while her vocals were still heard. The media also believes her music lacks an identity. Critics believe her as “a pop girlie who dances” instead of her whole persona.
But say what you want to say, these two singers have both impacted music. To answer the burning question if Tate McRae is the new “Pop Princess” of this generation, the answer would be no. People have very strong feelings on how Spears will never be replaced. Her legacy will forever live on in pop music as the girl from the Mickey Mouse Club whose impact on pop culture, image, and abilities as performer has kept her number one place on the Billboard’s top 10 stars of the 21st century.
