As the students filled the courtyard, bead necklaces and red, white, and blue outfits stood out. For the 5th day of spirit week, SGA decided on Red, White, and Blue Day, to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
Though America’s 250th birthday is on July 4, Bak chose to celebrate it on May 1st. The ‘birthday’ marks exactly 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The day is meant to reflect on the nation’s past, while honoring contributions, and so much more.
On July 4th, many come together to celebrate by singing The Star-Spangled Banner and dressing with the traditional colors. However, this year will be different as there are many ways to celebrate. For example, Bear’s Ranch in Durango, Colorado is hosting the ‘Home of the Brave – America 250 / Colorado 150 July 4th Commemoration; on July 4th and July 5th for citizens to show their devotion to our country.
Even in West Palm Beach celebrations are constantly happening on July 4th, held along Flagler Drive in downtown. This event features three stages of music, a patriotic ceremony, and an 18-minute fireworks display.
Another celebration at Boca Raton Historical Society Exhibits “The 14th Colony” exhibit, exploring Florida’s role in the American Revolution, this event takes place from May through August of 2026.
Isabella Owens, eighth grade communication major, gives us a deeper dive on what America’s birthday means to her.
“America’s birthday allows us to honor the country we once fought for, and it gives us the option to be grateful for our freedom and opportunities. In school, since we are dressing up, it displays that we care about our country and all of us can unite to celebrate this memorable day.”
Everyone’s spirit and patriotism stood out on the entire Bak campus, showing that it wasn’t just any regular spirit day, but a historical meaning behind it.
