An influx of speeding violations was reported near Palm Beach County schools, prompting action from local authorities and the School District of Palm Beach County (SDPBC). In response to this issue, many municipalities have installed new speed cameras and are stepping up enforcement in school zones.
After the law was implemented, over 30 zones across the county, including Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, and Wellington, have taken steps to receive the new cameras. Enforcing speed limits in Florida school zones helps keep children walking or biking safely.
The cameras are part of a “School Zone Safety Program” established by House Bill 657, which was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2023. These cameras have been proven effective in preventing crashes and fatal injuries that students may be prone to.
These cameras issue $100 in civil penalties for drivers caught going 10mph over the speed limit during peak hours, from pickup to dropoff near school zones. At least 330 speeding citations have been issued by law enforcement agencies across Palm Beach County since the school year began, according to court records.
As a result, this new rule will help reduce speeders, providing the assurance needed to law enforcement and the community, while keeping students safe throughout the School District of Palm Beach County.
